I’ve not had much time to blog this week but I have actually made a fair amount of headway on a homebrew game based on old school D&D and utilizing the Five Color Magic concept. I’m hoping to have an “alpha” version of the game ready and printed up at Staples this weekend, though that might be pushing it a bit.
Here is what it looks like it’s going to be:
- 48-page letter-size book
- Character levels 1 through 8
- Human PCs only
- 5 wizard classes
- 5 warrior classes
- Roll to advance
- Simplified monster write-ups
We’re thinking of the highly original name “Wizards & Warriors” because those are the two classes to choose from, with each having 5 colorized sub-classes. The mechanics of the game are going to be pretty much B/X D&D. The monster selection is going to be most of the AD&D list redone with combined single attacks and written in the OD&D matrix style. Other various tweaks and houserules that we’ve been using and like.
It is NOT going to be a Magic: The Roleplaying Game at all, rather more like D&D with magic and alignment loosely based on the five color scheme used in Magic: The Gathering.

Sounds like you’ve really latched on to this project. Well done. I curious to here more about five warrior classes as well. Keep us posted.

It started out as curiosity on my part and I liked the results. Then my son, who plays M:tG REALLY liked the results and noted that his friends would probably like something along those lines more than “standard” D&D. And he had a lot of good ideas which we’re incorporating. So his excitement has me excited.
I would love to see a PDF when you’re done.

I will have one available once we get past the “alpha” stage. While I don’t expect that anyone will really play it, I’m hoping for enough interest to get some feedback to incorporate into our final version.
5 warriors sounds intriguing. Will they be tied to the colors too, or some other 5-fold scheme?
Colors. We’re more or less doing away with alignment and using the 5-color thing as a semi-replacement. The result is going to be a bit “gamey” but fun, I think.
Are you kidding me? I will use these rules in my upcoming game (assuming they’re available).

I’m definitely watching how this develops. I’ve been thinking of incorporating a variant magic system into my world to further emphasize the differences between the area where my players are and one of the other nearby countries. I think this could definitely fit the bill. Including multiple warrior types just adds more to the mix.
You had mentioned the variant magic system idea for outlying areas in your game and I continue to think that’s intriguing.
I really like the idea of rolling to advance, the 5 colours and the simplified monster stats so I’d love to give it a shot.
[...] of the major things we’ve decided to do with our Five Color Game is to remove the ability score for Wisdom from the game. This wasn’t a light decision, and [...]
I can’t wait to see this!
I love the idea of human-centered wizards & warriors only, I’ve just never been ballsy enough to do it.

Hey, Lord Kilgore, are there any updates on your polychromatic magnum opus? I am really eager to take a look at what you’ve put together.

LOL. If you’re holding your breath for a “magnum opus” you’re going to be disappointed.
Things have been interfering. But I’m hoping to have a pre-alpha PDF of the players’ section in the next couple of days. It’s close.
